Preface · OVERVIEWProject Overview

I drew a
new map of the neighborhood where I grew up for thirty-three years.

Munhakdongne opened in 1993 with two collections of fiction and prose. It is now a publishing group with over twenty brands and affiliates, and its book list includes 8,784 books.

BlueCanvas has been creating and operating the Munhakdongne website, Book Club Munhakdongne, and Weekly Munhakdongne since 2015. We proposed a renewal direction for what the next website should look like based on questions we gathered while working together for nearly 10 years. This page is a record of those proposals.

Chapter 1 · THE QUESTION

8,784 volumes books and twenty of them over The name is living In the neighborhood, The reader today read one Volume 9 how Shall we meet?

Chapter 2 ANALYSISThree tasks collected during operation

I edited the questions I collected during the operation as if they were
proofreading.

While running the website, I heard similar stories several times from the editorial department and readers. I organized the stories one by one, as if marking them with a red pen on proofreading paper.

Proofreading 1 / 3Book navigation

New books come out every week, and the only way to choose is categorization and sorting.

The book list could be divided into categories, brands, and series, but it was ultimately a long list organized by publication date. Readers who were still undecided about what to read needed a different starting point.

You can also choose by mood and topic

Proofreading 2 / 3Brand

More than twenty brands were being introduced with
the same voice.

Nanda and Elixir, the bookseller and the storyteller have different readers, speaking styles, and covers. However, on the website, only names of the same size were placed in the filter.

Each brand has its own house and nameplate

Orthodontics 3 / 3Family Service

One neighborhood was divided into
four sites.

Munhakdongne, Book Club Munhakdongne, Dokpa, and Weekly Munhakdongne were created at different times, so the speaking style and length on screen were slightly different. To the reader, it is all the same Munhakdongne.

Connected like alleys in a neighborhood

Chapter 3 PEOPLE

I drew
five people visiting this neighborhood.

Instead of age or gender, people were divided by the reason they came to the website. This is because if the reason is different, what you look for on the first screen will also be different.

Chapter 4 BRAND THINKING

It
startedfrom the two words ‘neighborhood’.

“Various imprints and affiliates originating from Munhakdongne are working together, each creating a rich and colorful world of books with their own unique sound and light.”Introduction to Munhakdongne Publishing Group
  1. 01 · 1993 · One volumeOpened with just one name

In 1993, Munhakdongne began with two collections of fiction and prose.

  2. 02 · 1999–2022 · BookshelfEach brand was selected

Brands ranging from children's and comics, arts and humanities, mysteries and essays lined up one by one to form bookshelves.

  3. 03 · Now · NeighborhoodWhen book spines come together, it becomes a neighborhood.

The sight of book spines of different heights and colors standing side by side resembles the skyline of a neighborhood where people live together. The website graphics started here.

BRAND STATEMENT

From a homepage that sells books,
to a town where books live.

From the slogan “Dreaming of a better world through books”From the suggested sentence “A neighborhood where books live”
01 / COVER FIRST

The cover is the main character.

The cover is the face of the book that editors and designers thought about for the longest time. The screen supports quietly like paper, without cutting the cover or covering it with text.

02 / ONE AT A TIME

Show each book slowly.

Before I make a long list, I will first tell you about the book we will meet today and my first impressions of it. This is because the time you choose is part of the reading experience.

03 / NEIGHBORHOOD

It continues like an alley.

It goes from book to author, from author to series, and from series to book club. Even after you finish reading a book, you should always have somewhere else to go.

PHOTOGRAPHY DIRECTION

Take a picture of the place where the book is placed .

On the publisher's website, the photo should be a background that makes the cover stand out. We set a standard for conveying the atmosphere through the movement of hands and where books are actually placed, such as desks, bookshelves, local bookstores, and libraries.

Chapter 5 COLOR SYSTEM

Because the cover is the most gorgeous,
the screen becomes paper.

Hundreds of new covers come out every year. When your website adds color, it competes with the cover. So, the background was made of off-white paper, the letters were made with ink, and only a single strand of string in the book was left as the accent color.

COLOR EXPLORATIONI applied three palettes on the same screen

OPTION 1 · Ink and white paperThe black color of the logo was taken as is. It's solid but cold like a newspaper, and the white cover is buried in the white background and the border has disappeared.

OPTION 2 · All colors on the coverWhen colors were given to each field, the screen competed with the cover. There were no signs similar to the background color at all.

OPTION 3 · Paper, ink, and dividing lineOn an off-white background, the borders of both light and dark covers are vivid. The red band is only used for news and current location.

Off-whitePaper

Before choosing the background
I uploaded ten covers first.

I placed a cover as bright as the line of sight and a cover as dark as a collection of world literature on the same screen and only changed the background color. You can compare for yourself by clicking the button below.

On the off-white background, most of the covers maintained their outlines. The white cover has a clear border thanks to its one-tone dark background, and the black cover has a clear border thanks to its light background.

Pretendard · 400–900

The road is Gothic, and the story is Myeongjo.

The solid gothic style of the Munhakdongne logo was used to guide the way, such as menus and buttons. Myeongjo, which resembles the main text of a book, was written in places where the story flows, such as in the book title, introduction, and series.

Even within one screen, the font changes when roles change. So readers can know where to press or read without having to learn anything.

Chapter 7 · DECISIONWhat criteria did you choose?

Rather than looking at a pretty designa design with a shiny cover.

The four design proposals were evaluated together based on seven criteria. The most important criteria were whether the cover stood out and whether the operation of uploading a new book every week was light. This is because publisher websites have to accept hundreds of new covers every year.

Evaluation criteriaA · A town where books liveB · One sentenceC · Night libraryD · Neighborhood map

At three o'clock in the afternoon, sunlight falls diagonally on the glass door of a local bookstore. At that time, the owner takes out each new book and strokes the cover with the palm of his hand. A book that no one has opened yet smells like paper.

I find the page I finished reading yesterday and pull the drawstring. The story was quietly waiting where I stopped. A bicycle passes by the window, and the next sentence begins slowly.

The menu is not like an organization chart
but like a neighborhood map.

Instead of a publishing group's departmental structure, we regrouped the menus around what readers want to do. The magazine in 「Books/Authors」 was moved out separately, and the notices in 「Customer Center」 were moved to 「Neighborhood News」.

Six routes depart from Home, and Book Club Munhakdongne, Dokpa, Weekly Munhakdongne, and Café Comma are grouped together as family stops where you can transfer from any route.

Concluding remarks · AND TODAYQuestions continued while operating together

We have been operating together for nearly 10 years.
I continue to ask the same question.

BlueCanvas has been with Munhakdongne since 2015 by creating and operating the website, Book Club Munhakdongne, and Weekly Munhakdongne.

The questions I set while preparing the proposal always became the standard for my work during that time. I first ask how to make the cover stand out, what path to open first for new readers, and where to lead after reading a book.
