01 / OVERVIEWProject Overview

A story of a school rooted in faith
growing toward the world

Gyeonggi Global School (GGS) is a Christian alternative school located in Ilsan, Goyang-si, Gyeonggi-do. Based on the American Common Core Curriculum (CCSS), we teach at one school for twelve years from elementary school to high school, and graduates go on to universities in the United States and around the world.

BlueCanvas proposed two directions for redesigning the school's main website. LUMEN depicts each student with light, and HORIZON unfolds the possibilities for the world to the Earth's horizon. This page is a record of the considerations and process that led to the two design proposals.

02 / THE QUESTION

Twelve Years Entrusted School Finding Parents First On the screen What Would you like to check This The school What Believes And How far does the child Go Can Is there?

ANALYSIS

The main screen
Three things to solve

We re-read the school introduction, curriculum, and admission information one by one to organize what parents want to see on the main screen. There was already enough information. What was needed was a sequence to weave that information into a story.

01 · IDENTITY

Faith and the world,
two words in one scene

There are two ways to describe GGS. One is the Christian faith and six values, and the other is the American curriculum and universities around the world. If the two stories were separated in the first screen, the nature of the school would be blurred, so the two words had to be combined into one scene.

Tying roots and horizons into one sentence
02 · JOURNEY

The twelve years of elementary, middle, and high school seem like one path.

The curriculum is divided into three menus: elementary, middle, and high school. However, what parents who are worried about entering elementary school are curious about is the path that will lead to the next 12 years. I put the three processes on one line so that the beginning and end are visible together.

Connect in one line from G1 to G12
03 · NEXT STEP

Even admission consultation
without hesitation

The admission process goes through a consultation application, 1:1 face-to-face consultation, test and interview, and then leads to admission registration. This order is displayed at the end of the main screen, and online application and phone consultation are placed in the same place.

Four-step admission process on the first page

I first drew the
four people that open the main screen.

The school website is not only visited by families considering admission. Families of current students, students, and families and teachers visiting the school in English also open the same first screen. We divided visitors into reasons for opening the website and determined which screen each person should see first.

03 / BRAND THINKING

The history of the school
It was a process of expanding one point .

  1. 1997 · Startsmall educational community

It started as a small educational community in 1997, and introduced the American curriculum in 2005. Every story starts from this one point.

  2. 2015 · IlsanCampus in Ilsan

In 2015, it moved to the Ilsan campus and took on its current name, Gyeonggi Global School. The dot became a place on the map.

  3. Today · WorldTo universities around the world

Graduates go on to universities in the United States and around the world. The line that started in Ilsan is spreading around the world.

BRAND STATEMENT

Rooted in Faith,
Ready for the World.

It is rooted in faith and grows towards the world.

From the school's mission and visionTo the proposed sentence written together by the two design proposals
01 / ROOTED

Show the roots first.

Faith and the Six Values are important criteria for parents when choosing a school. Before focusing on performance, we first talk about what the school believes.

02 / CONTINUOUS

Twelve years are said to be one flow.

Rather than introducing elementary, middle, and high schools separately, they are presented sequentially in the order in which a student grows up.

03 / OPEN

It shows a school that is open to the world.

We tell the same story to families looking for a school abroad, with international accreditation, accepted universities, and English main content.

TWO METAPHORS

I drew the same sentence
in two scenes.

  1. LUMEN · LightEach student is a light

One small light gathers to form the Earth, and that light leads to the universities of the world. Faith, values, and a person's growth are expressed in a warm light.

  2. HORIZON · HorizonPossibilities extend beyond the horizon

It shows the school's view of the Earth's horizon as seen from space. The courage and possibilities of moving into an unfamiliar world were spread out on a wide screen.

  3. LUMEN × HORIZONThe moment the light rises above the horizon

The two design proposals are not two different answers, but rather two moments in the same scene. Just as a new day begins when the light rises over the horizon, your child's next step begins as well.

PHOTOGRAPHY DIRECTION

Rather than a decorated scene
Pick a bright day .

Parents first see a day at school through photos on the website. Rather than listing group photos, we set a standard for selecting scenes from an actual day, such as hands immersed in learning, light coming through a window, and activities outside the classroom. We only use photos verified by the school for the final screen.

Students' hands filling in worksheets together on a desk
01 · Hands immersed in learning

02 · Learning outside the classroom
Students' hands gathered together on a desk in the morning sunlight

Navy, gold, ivory, ultramarine, and apricot colored paper samples, compass, small globe, fountain pen
04 / COLOR SYSTEM

The school's navy and gold
into the night sky and dawn light.

The current website uses deep navy (#00225C) and gold (#D4B972). Instead of abandoning the two colors, in LUMEN they were expanded to the night sky and light, and in HORIZON they were expanded to the blue of the earth and the apricot of dawn.

COLOR EXPLORATIONI thought about four palettes
OPTION 1 · NAVY ONLY

I've summarized the current navy into one item.

The sense of trust was clear, but the entire screen felt heavy and cold. It was difficult to convey the necessary warmth to parents who were considering enrolling in elementary school.

hold
OPTION 2 · BRIGHT PRIMARY

I tried bright primary colors suitable for an elementary school.

The children's energy came back, but they could not bear the weight of school preparing them for higher education and college. A student who spends twelve years at one school needed colors that he could grow up with.

hold
OPTION 3 · NIGHT & GOLD

Navy was changed to the night sky and gold to light.

We added depth while keeping the two colors of the school. Gold on a dark background is the first thing that catches the eye, even if used sparingly.

LUMEN
OPTION 4 · ULTRAMARINE DAWN

The apricot color of dawn was added to the blue color of the Earth.

Vivid ultramarine, soft apricot, and sky blue were used together to create a bright and open look for the school. Small red marks are used only for asterisks and progress bars.

A journey of twelve years .

LUMEN's first screen is a motion graphic that plays as you scroll. A point of light spreads into particles to form a globe, and the light's trajectory continues from the Ilsan campus to the 14 accepted universities.

Instead of real-time 3D, pre-rendered frames are drawn based on the scroll position. On mobile phones, frames for vertical screens are loaded separately to display the same scene seamlessly.

As you scroll down, the camera approaches the Earth.

HORIZON's first screen zooms in on a picture of Earth, tilts it, and makes it look like the camera is moving. Instead of heavy video, we created a scene with just one image and scroll calculations.

06 / DESIGN DIRECTIONSSame skeleton, two expressions

Before choosing one correct answer, I drew
two possibilities all the way through.

Although it started from the same information structure as the same school materials, the nature of the website varies greatly depending on what is shown first. HORIZON, with a view toward the world, and LUMEN, which sequentially conveys faith and values, were completed to the end of the main page.

The screen below is a recording of the actual design draft. Click on the scene name to go to that section.
