01 / OVERVIEWProject Overview

From the institute in 1923
to 9,057 alumni

Kyungpook National University School of Medicine began as the Daegu Medical School in 1923 and celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2023. As Korea's first national medical school established in a rural area, it has trained 9,057 alumni over a century.

BlueCanvas proposed two directions for redesigning the centennial site. “Walking a Century,” which translates the name of the commemorative ceremony into the steps of a scroll, and “100 Years of Light for Life,” which depicts a heart for life with a heart made of glass. This page summarizes the considerations and process that led to the two design proposals.

FOUR QUESTIONS

Renewal started with
Four Questions

  1. Q1
Will the passage of time 100 years be conveyed in the first screen?

In both designs, the first screen was a film that played in a scrolling manner. Eye A walks for 10 seconds from one beat to NEXT 100 on the ECG, and Eye B moves in time with the scrolling of an 8-second video of a glass heart glowing.

  2. Q2
Is it possible to bring out the photos and artifacts from the subpage to the main screen?

We decided to place a scene of flipping the timeline horizontally on the main page, and erase the background of the eight relics to show them as if they were being taken out one by one from a drawer.

  3. Q3
Is there a reason to come back even after the event is over?

Compared to previous event schedules, we have included the sculptures, memorial halls, and 100-year history of the 100th anniversary ahead of us, and we have provided information on fund raising and material donation to the end of the page.

  4. Q4
Would the same emotion be felt if an alumnus opened it on his phone?

The film was rendered separately for the vertical screen, and scenes that had been flipped horizontally were rearranged to fit the length and font size of the vertical screen.

03 / VISITORS & ROUTEVisitors and routes

After the event is over
Anyone who opens this site
I thought it was your type

After the anniversary week, fewer people come to check the event schedule. Instead, long-term visitors remain, such as alumni looking to revisit the school's history, donors looking to contribute to the fund, and reporters looking for information. We first decided on the scene in which each visitor would arrive.

The current site is divided into four menus and eleven pages. Proposal A connected this content to twelve scenes on one main page, going through 100 years of records one by one just from top to bottom. A line indicates which scene the existing page on the left was moved to on the right.

04 / BRAND READINGBrand interpretation

Before creating a new symbol, I read
100 Years of Clues

Rather than creating a new logo, we found the story of the website from the name, location, and symbols the school already had. The four clues below were used in the first screen, color, and movement of both designs.

01 · NAME

「Walking a century」

This is the name of the 100th anniversary opening ceremony held on September 2, 2023. In Proposal A, the word walking was moved to the scroll part of the website. The years go up as you go down, and when you reach the end of the page you arrive at 2023 and the next 100 years.

02 · PLACE

red brick main building

The main building of Dongin-dong Campus, built in December 1933, is the face of the school. The film in A passes through a scene where a line drawing of the facade of the main building changes into an actual photo, and the palette contains the color of the shade of brick.

03 · LIFE

heart and beat

Medicine is ultimately about protecting a person's life. In Proposal A, this thought was drawn as a beat on an electrocardiogram, and in Proposal B, it was drawn as a glowing glass heart. In both designs, the first scene begins with a symbol of life.

04 · NEXT

double helix and infinity

The next 100 years will be about research. The film in A ends with “100” unraveling into a double helix. Proposal B changed the “100” in the header to the number 1 followed by the infinity symbol ∞, expressing time that does not end even after a century.

05 / ARCHIVEHow to handle records

The last 100 years have been in real records,
the next 100 years in green images.

This is the principle that was followed in both designs. We used old photos and photos of relics released by the school as is, and only drew new images of the future that has not yet arrived. This is to prevent the made-up past from being mixed with real records.

The photo of the relic was recreated with the white background erased. As the background disappeared, the door, stethoscope, and visit bag began to appear on the screen like real objects.

The same stethoscope with the background erased

CUT OUT · 8 OBJECTS

As if taken out of a drawer

By moving the center bar left or right, you can compare the original photo with the cut with the background erased. All eight points were trimmed in the same way, so that they approached one by one from the inside of the screen in the “Drawer of Time” in A.

05 / IMAGERYImages for the next 100 years

Instead of a person, I drew a
symbol of life

There are no actual pictures in the scenes that show the future. So I drew images of symbols of life that medicine deals with, such as the heart, spirals, and nerve cells. None of the five sheets contained human faces, and the red and gold colors matched the palette of the two designs.

  1. It is a heart made of red glass ribbon and golden lines. I drew it as a sculpture so it wouldn't look like an anatomy drawing.

  2. It is a double helix made of red particles. The next 100 years of research.

06 / COLORColor chart

From one red in the logo
to two palettes

We used the red #E60012 of the 100th anniversary logotype as the standard. Instead of painting this red widely on screen, in Proposal A, I moved it to a slightly lowered red so that it does not spread over the darkness of the film, and in Proposal B, I moved it to a deep crimson that reminds me of the heart and blood. The remaining colors were chosen from the bricks of the main building, old photos, and recording paper.

The primary colors in the photo would be dull or dark if used as is, so I adjusted them to the brightness and saturation that can be read on the screen. The left side of the arrow is the color measured in the photo, and the right side is the color used in the design.

A · Walk a century

The darkness of film and recording paper
  • Background · 50.2%The color of darkness in which the film is played. It is the basis for the first screen, campus photos, and commemorative week scenes.

  • Recording paper · 38.5%This is the paper color of old postcards and records. It is the basis of the chronology and time drawers and news scenes.

  • Shade of bricks · 10.3%This is the shade color of the bricks of the main building. Used to add red to numbers and fund scenes.

  • Gold color from an old photo · 0.8%This is a gold color selected from a faded photo. Write English subtitles and dust particles on the film.

  • Red of electrocardiogram · 0.3%The red color of the logo is toned down a little so that it spreads less in the dark. Write only the year and emphasized words.

B · 100 years of light toward life

Heart of the Night and Ivory
  • Ivory · 47.2%This is the background for most of the page. Record cards and news lists are placed above this.

  • Sand · 27.8%This is the basis for the scene where the history is flipped horizontally. I went one shade darker than ivory.

  • Crimson · 13.1%A deep red reminiscent of the heart and blood. Write emphasis words in the title, progress bar, and final scene.

  • Chestnut · 10.3%It is black with a reddish tinge. It is the basis of the home screen and menu where the heart lies.

  • Ink · 1.7%This is the color of the text. It's warmer than pure black.

Clicking on a color swatch will copy the HEX value. The number in the sample is the brightness contrast with the color of the text above it, and the ratio is a value measured by capturing the main page screen of the two designs for each scene.

07 / TYPOGRAPHYTypeface

Engraved letters and
printed numbers

The Korean title in Proposal A was written in Noto Serif KR with thick strokes like the letters engraved on a monument. The year and English subtitles were set to Bodoni Moda, the Didone style used in 19th-century printed materials, and the text was written in Pretendard for easy reading. Proposal B contrasts the thin and thick strokes of Pretendard in one title, and uses Georgia for the year and number.

Learning, which started in a small training center in Daegu in 1923, has fostered 9,057 alumni over the course of a century.

Long paragraphs are written in gothic style without decoration for easy reading.

08 / FILM & MOTIONFilm and movement

Scrolling
becomes walking

Both designs treat scrolling like a video playhead. Pushing it down causes the film to flow forward, and raising it makes it roll backwards. 100 years pass at the same pace as the visitor walks.

The 10-second film written on the first screen of Proposal A was made into a storyboard with eight cuts, and photos, line drawings, and particles were drawn with code and rendered for each frame.

Proposal A

A Century of MedicineWalking through a century

This direction takes the name from the 100th anniversary opening ceremony and uses scrolling as a step. On the first screen, a 10-second film is played along the scroll, and below it, a horizontal chronology, a drawer of time, photos of Dongin-dong campus, commemorative week, and 100 Fund are continued on one page.

  8. 09 · Next 100 years

Above the red double helix, “the base of medicine heading to the world for the next 100 years” comes to mind.

Proposal B

A Century of Care100 years of light for life

This is a direction that depicts the heart that protects life as a heart made of glass. The 8-second video on the first screen moves along the scroll, followed by a history that moves horizontally through 1923, 1933, 1952, and 2023, a record that you can click to enlarge, and a future vision that changes into three scenes: education, research, and care.
