Landing page vs website,
What to make first

Ad inflow is from the landing page, search inflow is from the website.
Judgment criteria for determining the order of our company

1. Executive Summary

Let me start with the answer. If you plan to bring in customers through advertising, start with the landing page. If you have a lot of customers coming through searches and referrals, start with the website. It is right to make it. The two pages are not different in size, but in what they do.

The most common situations encountered in practice are as follows. We need to run advertisements starting next month, but the website hasn't even been planned. At this time, “postponing advertising until the website is completed” and “running advertising on the main page of the website first” are both choices that burn money. The former burns opportunity costs, and the latter burns advertising costs. What is needed is a standard for determining the order.

What is the difference between a landing page and a website?

The landing page is the person who clicked on the ad. A conversion device that leads to one action (application, purchase, inquiry)And the website is for people who come to verify the company. A brand base that builds trustno see.

To compare, one is a salesman and the other is an office building. If you ask a salesman to run the office or run sales from the office, neither will perform as well as they should.

This article covers three things: The difference between the roles of the two pages, three questions to decide what to make first, and a realistic combination that fits your budget and schedule. It is designed so that managers of startups and small and medium-sized businesses who are about to run advertisements can make a decision with just this article.

2. Landing page and website are different tools

If you break it down into one line, it looks like this. The landing page is One visitor into one action, the website is Multiple visitors to their respective destinations This is the sending page. This difference leads to everything from structure, production period, and performance indicators.

What is a landing page?

A landing page is a single page where a person who clicks on an ad lands. Since there is only one destination, the structure is simple. There are no menus or minimal menus, and only one suggestion is repeated throughout the scroll. At the end, an application button awaits.

The key point is that it is ‘only for advertising inflow’. People who arrive at the landing page have already seen the ad text and expected something. Any information that is irrelevant to that expectation—company history, organizational chart, referrals to other services—is a trigger for churn. So, the better a landing page is, the more things have been removed.

Why do you need a separate website?

website visitors have different purposes. Some people search for the company name, some get a link from a business partner, and some come in after seeing a job posting. So the website acts as a crossroads. Menus guide each person to their destination, and each page answers different questions.

What a website builds is trust and search assets. When case/column pages start to be searched for industry keywords, inflow occurs even without advertising costs. But it takes time. It won't generate traffic tomorrow like advertising does.

division landing page website
purpose Convert to a single action Build brand trust, provide information
visitor status A person who came with high expectations after seeing an advertisement A person who came to verify the company
main funnel Meta, Google, Naver advertisement, campaign link URL for search, introduction, business card/proposal
Page composition 1 page, single scroll Multiple pages + menu structure
conversion goal One (Application/Purchase/Inquiry) Multiple (inquiries, recruitment, subscription, etc.)
production period Normally 1~2 weeks Normally 4-8 weeks
performance indicators Conversion rate, cost per acquisition (CPA) Search traffic, dwell time, inquiry quality

So, is the landing page a ‘small website’?

no. This is the most expensive misunderstanding in practice. If you reduce the website to create a landing page, the menu, company introduction, and links to various services will follow. This opens up multiple exits for visitors. Conversely, if you try to replace your website with a single landing page, search traffic will not grow because search engines will only have one page to index.

Common Mistake ① Receiving advertising traffic to the main website

The main page is a crossroads. If you click on the advertisement for “Small Capital Startup with Significantly Reduced Startup Costs” and the screen you arrive at is the slogan “Company that grows with customers” and eight menus, the visitor will have to wander around looking for the information they are looking for on their own. Most people leave before they find it.

The advertising fee has already been paid at the moment of clicking. If the receiving page doesn't convert, all those clicks are a sunk cost. This happens.

Decision Framework

3. A frame for deciding what to make first

Three questions are sufficient as a criterion. Where do customers come from, how many actions will the visitor take, and for how long? Once you answer the three questions, the order is almost automatic.

Question 1. Do customers come from ads or searches?

If new customers next quarter come from ads, landing pages come first. Advertising is billed per click, so the conversion rate of the receiving page is the advertising efficiency. On the other hand, if most customers come by searching for the company name and introduction, what they want to check is the company's reality. The website comes first.

Question 2. Will the visitor have one action or multiple actions?

Write down in one sentence what your visitors should do. If it ends with just “Apply for a consultation,” it’s a landing page. If the sentence is long, such as “I need to browse products, inquire about quotes, and look at job postings,” then a website is needed.

Question 3. Is it needed after 2 weeks or after 2 months?

If your campaign starts in two weeks, you have no choice. Start with a landing page and add the website afterward. If the advertising plan has not yet been finalized and you have more than two months to spare, you can set up the website first and add a landing page at the time of the campaign.

What if all three are worn vaguely? In fact, most companies fall into this category. This is not the order The problem of specific gravityno see. The combination of focusing on the landing page and starting the website with the minimum configuration to receive verification movement has the lowest probability of failure. Specific combinations are covered in Chapter 5.

Common Mistake ② Only a landing page and no verification page

Many visitors who are moved by the landing page search for the company name on the portal before making payment or applying. If the only thing that appears at this time is an advertising landing page, suspicion increases. Few people would spend money on a company that has no reviews, no company information, and no news.

Even if you only have a three- or four-page website containing the company introduction, CEO greetings, and contact information, this dropout will be greatly reduced. While the landing page drives sales, the website plays the role of passing background checks.Do it.

Conversion Design

4. Landing page design that creates conversions

Landing pages that perform have almost the same structure. The front page makes a promise (headline), shows what you get (benefits), gives reasons to believe (evidence), and calls for action (CTA). If you change the order or skip steps, your conversion rate will be the first to notice.

Headline: Promise as advertised

Visitors arrive with a memory of what they saw in your ad. If you see “0 won membership fee” and click on it, but there is no mention of it on the first screen, half of the money will be spent at that moment. Your headline should be an extension of your ad copy. If you run multiple advertising materials, it is a set that includes matching the landing screen for each material.

Benefit: Use results, not features

“Korea’s first AI-based system” is the company’s pride, and “30 seconds to confirm quote” is a customer benefit. From the second screen onwards, we lay out the results the customer gets in order. Three to five is sufficient. If you list ten, not a single one will be memorable.

Evidence: Alleviates doubt

Reviews, cumulative numbers, certificates, media reports, construction examples. The industry decides what evidence to use. When recruiting franchisees, the story of the existing store owner's operation is strong, and when it comes to procedures and construction, the before-and-after comparison is strong. How to stack evidence blocks in affiliate recruitment landing Franchise Landing StrategyThis was dealt with separately.

CTA: Just one, multiple times

There is only one type of button. Placing a phone call, KakaoTalk inquiry, and application form side by side may seem friendly, but in reality, it makes you postpone your decision. Pick the one action with the least burden and place it repeatedly at the first, middle, and last screen. It is better for the phrase to show what you are getting, such as “Request a free consultation” rather than “Submit.”

A/B testing: Fix with data, not intuition

The real advantage of landing pages is that they can be modified. Reorganizing a website is a project, but changing a single headline on a landing page only takes a day. With ads turned on, traffic is split between the two versions, judged by conversion rate, and the winner is left. As this repetition accumulates, it becomes a page that produces twice the results with the same advertising cost.

What should I test first?

The order in which the conversion rate moves significantly when changed is generally Headline → Home screen CTA text → Evidence placement → Number of form itemsno see. Details such as button colors will be discussed after all of these nets have been touched.

The fewer form items you have, the more applications you will receive, and the more you increase them, the higher the quality of applications will be. Adjust based on the amount of leads your sales team can handle.

5. Budget and Schedule: A Realistic Combination

The ideal answer is “both,” but your budget demands an order. There are three combinations that have been proven in practice.

Step 1. Landing Page Exclusive — Item Verifier

In the early stages, when the advertising response itself has not been verified, start with a landing page. Production is usually completed in 1-2 weeks, and once advertisements are placed, data accumulates from that week. The goal at this stage is learning, not sales. Determine your next investment after checking which messages are clicked on and which screens people are leaving on.

Step 2. Landing page + mini website — most answers

It is a combination of attaching a three- or four-page website containing the company introduction, service overview, and contact information to the campaign landing page. The landing page receives the advertisement, and the website receives the company name search. While preventing verification deviations mentioned in Chapter 3, the initial cost does not increase significantly. If you're not sure which one to start with, this combination is the default.

Step 3. Full website + landing page for each campaign

Once your business is established, grow your website into a search asset. When case/column pages begin to be searched using industry keywords, reliance on advertising decreases. From this point on, the landing page is operated like a consumable product produced by season and product. Spring promotion landing, new product landing, recruitment landing—leaving the main website as is.

It's also good to have a sense of schedule. A one-page landing usually takes 1-2 weeks from planning to opening, a mini website takes 3-4 weeks, and a full website takes 4-8 weeks depending on content preparation. In my experience, what takes the longest is not the development, but the time the company takes to prepare the manuscript and photos. If you gather introduction text, representative photos, and case materials before requesting production, the schedule will be noticeably faster.

If you only have one budget

If you plan to start advertising soon, this is the landing page. If you have no plans to advertise, this is the website. There is one criterion for judgment, “Where will the next visitor come from?”no see.

If you choose a landing page, be sure to include a company information section at the bottom. You can receive at least some of the gaze that comes for verification.

6. Scenario by industry

Even with the same frame, the answer will vary depending on the industry. This is because the inflow structure is different. We have compiled a table of recommended combinations for six frequently encountered industries.

Industry main funnel make it first Recommended Combination
Franchise franchise recruitment Meta/YouTube advertising landing page Affiliate recruitment landing + brand website
Short-form based commerce Reels·Shorts·TikTok landing page Product detailed landing + store linkage
Education/Lecture SNS advertising, influencer landing page Recruitment landing for each class + instructor introduction page
Hospital/Clinic Search + Local Ads website Medical treatment information website + event landing
B2B manufacturing/solutions Search, introduction, exhibition website Trust-centered website + landing for exhibition
Local services (interior, etc.) Search + Quotation Platform website Case-centered website + quote request landing

In the top three industries that are highly dependent on advertising, the landing page is the sales device itself. In particular, traffic coming from short forms disappears the moment the viewing flow stops, so the video hook and landing screen must be connected in one breath. This connection design is Short-form commerce strategyThis was covered in detail.

The three industries below are the opposite. People choosing a hospital or purchasing managers reviewing equipment worth tens of millions of won do not act upon a single advertisement. Search, compare, read cases, and inquire a few days later. In this industry, if you only run a landing page without a website, advertising costs will be blocked by a wall of trust. After laying the foundation with a website, the correct order is to attach a landing page only during campaigns such as events or exhibitions.

Conclusion

7. Conclusion and Checklist

If I were to shorten a long story into one line, it would be like this. If advertising comes first, then the landing page, and if search comes first, the website. And for most companies, it is safest to start with a combination of a landing page and a mini website.

Once you have decided on the order, check the six items below before execution.

execution checklist

  1. Check your intake channels: Next quarter, we will write down the proportion of new customers coming from advertising or search/referrals.
  2. Conversion Behavior Definition: Write down one single action your visitors will take in one sentence. Two sentences is a sign that you need a website.
  3. Check message match: Place the ad copy and landing screen headline side by side and compare whether they promise the same thing.
  4. Secure verification route: Check if there is a page that appears when you search for the company name. If not, start from the mini website
  5. Unify your CTA: Organize buttons into one type and place them repeatedly on the first screen, middle, and end.
  6. Implementing an improvement loop: After starting the ad, start with headline A/B testing using initial data.

A page is not a product that is created and finished, but a device that converts advertising costs into sales. When you are thinking about “landing or website,” fill in the six spaces above. Most of the answers come from there.
